The Coach Education Unit organized an informative and highly impactful Nutrition Program on the 23rd of October for Western Province North Zone -3 players at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, specifically aimed at enhancing the understanding of nutrition among under-15 cricketers. The session was led by Dr. Hashan Amarathunga, a well-regarded sports nutrition physician with extensive experience in guiding young athletes on how to optimize their diets for better performance and health.
During the session, Dr. Amarathunga emphasized the critical role that balanced meals play in the overall development of young athletes. He explained how essential nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, and fats contribute not only to energy production but also to the maintenance and growth of muscles. Dr. Amarathunga detailed how proteins are vital for muscle recovery and repair, especially after intense training sessions, while carbohydrates are key for fueling long-lasting energy during competitions.
The session also highlighted the importance of proper hydration and micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, which support everything from bone health to immune function. By providing these young athletes with a comprehensive understanding of the types of food they should consume before, during, and after training, Dr. Amarathunga equipped them with the knowledge necessary to make informed dietary choices that will benefit them throughout their sporting careers.
This initiative underscored the association’s commitment to not only improving technical skills but also fostering the holistic well-being of its players. The insights shared in this program will help young cricketers maximize their athletic potential while ensuring they maintain long-term health and vitality through proper nutrition.
